PBR Australia’s Monster Energy Tour returns to John Cain Arena this Saturday, 15 August, with the 2026 Melbourne Invitational marking the tour’s first appearance at the venue since 2019.

The event launches the run toward the 2026 PBR Australia Grand Finals, with the races for the National Champion, Rookie of the Year, and Bucking Bull of the Year titles all heating up as the season enters its final months.

Doors open to the sell-out crowd at 5:30 p.m. AEST, with the event starting at 7:00 p.m.

Fans with VIP On The Dirt tickets will have arena access from 4:30 p.m. for an exclusive preview show beginning at 5:00 p.m., featuring a chance to meet riders, stock contractors, and come face-to-face with an all-star bucking bull.

Team Queensland dominated Game 3 of the 2026 PBR Origin Series, defeating Team New South Wales ten rides to three at the TikTok Entertainment Centre in Sydney two weeks ago.

Seven Queensland riders contributed scores in a big night for the visitors, earning their second series sweep since the three-game format began in 2022.

Maroons bull rider Zane Hall was crowned champion of the PBR Origin III, while Blues cowboy Toby Collins earned 2026 Cowboy of Origin honours and earned a $30,000 bonus for his performance across the series.

Melbourne Invitational Event History

In 2019, fifteen riders recorded scores, but Nathan Burtenshaw proved his doubters wrong, leaving Melbourne with the event champion’s buckle and the tenth win of his career.

The Coonamble bull rider finished 3-for-3 to win by 8 points over Aaron Kleier, with Lachlan Richardson third as the best with two scores.

A year prior in 2018, it was Jason Mara who picked up the win in his final PBR Australia appearance. The Cloncurry talent finished strongest in the Championship Round to defeat Troy Wilkinson by just 1.5 points.

2017 belonged to Lucas Divino, with the Brazilian scoring a comfortable victory as the only rider to finish the night a perfect 3-for-3.

This weekend's Format, Prizemoney and Points

Twenty-five riders will battle it out over two rounds for a share of $40,000 in prize money.

All cowboys will face a bull in Round 1 and Round 2, and the rider with the highest aggregate score at the conclusion will be crowned the event champion and take home the bulk of the prize pool.

A maximum of 280 points are available to any individual rider towards the 2026 PBR Australian National Standings. Each round winner will receive 40 points, and the event champion will receive 200 points.

Talking Points

Bonus dollars up for grabs in Southern Run

PBR Australia has announced an additional $10,000 bonus will be up for grabs across its southern run through Victoria and South Australia.

It will go to the rider who finishes with the highest combined score across all rounds of competition at the 2026 Melbourne and Adelaide Invitational events.

We will have an even pen of bulls contracted for these two events, and I am expecting plenty of scores in the mid-80-point range, so anticipate a tight race for this bonus, as seen in the recent Cowboy of Origin race.

Shephard extends National Standings lead

Reigning National Champion Kurt Shephard has had a stellar winter run, going 9-for-14 across six events to extend his lead in the race for the Gold Buckle.

The Atherton cowboy entered the final week of May with a slender 52-point lead over Keny Roger de Oliveira, while Donnie Rutherfurd and Zane Hall trailed by about 240 points.

After wins in Newcastle, Cairns, and Bloomsbury, plus a runner-up finish at Burnett Heads and sixth in Sydney, that lead over Oliveira now sits at 488.50 points, with Hall the only other rider within 1000 points.

There is still a lot of bull riding to come, but if Shephard can maintain his 60% season riding percentage, his odds of claiming a second successive title continue to shorten.

Qualification for the 2026 PBR Australia Grand Finals

With the 2026 PBR Origin Series done and dusted, it’s time for riders to focus on their individual results and ensure they earn enough points to qualify for November’s Grand Finals in Townsville.

Twelve cowboys are currently ranked within 100 points of the No. 20 ranking, so round wins, placings and strong overall finishes are becoming very important, especially for riders outside the top 25.

This event kicks off a run of six-straight weekends of Monster Energy Tour action, so there will be plenty of opportunities for riders to make a jump up the standings, but time is running out with just ten regular season events remaining.
