Heywood cowboy Sam Woodall has celebrated his return to PBR Australia competition in style, emerging victorious at the 2026 Monster Energy Melbourne Invitational on Saturday night inside a sold-out John Cain Arena.

Buoyed by a parochial home-state crowd, Woodall covered his bulls in both rounds of competition, amassing an aggregate score of 167.40 points and earning more than $10,000 in prizemoney.

Less than two months after fracturing his leg in a practice session, the 28-year-old took full advantage of a re-ride opportunity, covering Jackie Red (Dunne Bulls) in the opening round for 82.50 points. It was a drama-filled 8 seconds, with the bull losing his footing during a change of direction, but the Victorian showed great composure to finish the ride strong into his hand. 

Woodall’s Round 2 score came aboard MSG Locating Filthy Rich (Lazy G Bucking Bulls) in a rematch of their 2024 matchup at Hawkesbury, where the bull had picked up the win. This time, Woodall was not going to be beaten, matching and countering every move the bull threw at him, with the judges marking the ride 84.90 points.

His rides placed sixth in Round 1 and fourth in the second round, but consistency on a tricky night for the cowboys was key to Woodall’s win.

Runner-up in Melbourne was Zane Hall, who continues his return to form, finishing with the event’s highest single score. The Athol talent’s Round 1 winning score of 88 points came in a rematch aboard Ariat Last Strike (Dunne Bulls). The bull had won both of their previous meetings, but Hall wasn’t to be denied on this occasion, handling the bull’s fake to the right and spin back to the left into his hand.

Rylee Ward continued his stellar run on tour, winning the second round with an outstanding 87.6-point ride on Cover Up (CF7 Bucking Bulls). It was sweet revenge for the Kiwi bull rider, who had bucked off the bull at the Townsville Supercars Touring Pro event in July. Ward finished the event in third place, marking five straight top-6 finishes since returning to Australian shores in early July.

Roam Aviation Without Warning (Dunne Bulls) and Dylan Weir teamed up for 86.50 points in Round 1 to earn the Tumut cowboy a fourth-place finish, with Donnie Rutherfurd a fraction of a point behind in fifth, after the Mount Isa talent earned 86.40 points on Spartan (CF7 Bucking Bulls).

Also picking up cheques were Toby Collins, who rode Aussie Gangster (CF7 Bucking Bulls) for 85.20 points; Kurt Shephard, who covered Mr Colourful (CF7 Bucking Bulls) for 85.10 points; and Alison Aguiar, who was 84.90 points aboard Pandemic (Lazy G Bucking Bulls/Edgar).

Thirteen riders posted scores, with the rundown including Keny Roger de Oliveira, Kelsey Pavlou, Ben Bode, Toby Leake and Caiden Sandilands.

With the thirteenth win of his career, Sam Woodall jumps up one spot on the 2026 PBR Australian National Standings leaderboard into fifth place. He earned a total of 246 championship points to move within 1082 points of the No. 1-ranked Kurt Shephard.

Zane Hall remains in third place following his runner-up finish, but he gained 123 points on Shephard, narrowing the gap to 573 points.

The other notable mover in the top 10 was Rylee Ward, who climbed two places from ninth to seventh.

With his seventh-place finish, Shephard extended his overall lead over No. 2-ranked Keny Roger de Oliveira by a further 22 points, bringing the margin to 506.50 points.

Oliveira leads the 2026 Rookie of the Year race, with Ethan Coster 568.50 points adrift and Colby Edgar a further 520 points behind.

YETI Bucking Bull of the Night honours went to Dunne Bulls, with their talented 4-year-old Last Post posting a solid 43.80 bull score in his blistering 1.4-second buck-off against Brumby Brandenburg in Round 2 of the competition. The out moves Last Post into third place in the Bucking Bull of the Year standings with an average of 43.51 points.

Alpha Blokes Warden (MJ/Keliher Bucking Bulls) was again impressive, dispatching Charlie Bailey in 2 seconds during the second round trip for 43.40 points, maintaining his second-place season ranking with an average bull score of 43.58 points.

The 2026 Bucking Bull of the Year race is still led by Stetson Nirvana from Dittmann Bucking Bulls, who holds a six-out average of 43.86 points.

With fourteen qualified rides, the cowboys finished the night a ride ahead of the season average riding percentage at 30.43%. The bulls finished slightly above the season standard, with an average score of 41.54 points awarded across the pen in Melbourne.

Next weekend, the PBR Australia Monster Energy Tour heads to the Entertainment Centre in Adelaide, South Australia, for the 2026 Monster Energy Adelaide Invitational, where the best bull riders and the rankest bucking bull will again do battle in front of a sold-out crowd.
