PBR Adelaide Invitational: Matchups to Watch

Adelaide presents another crucial test as riders look to capitalise on a challenging draw and build momentum before the regular season enters its final stretch.

By Josh Hanson

The Monster Energy Tour arrives in Adelaide with just nine events left in the 2026 PBR Australia regular season. While some riders are starting to hit their stride, others are struggling for consistency and battling to secure their place at November's Grand Finals in Townsville.

Tonight, the riders will face a set of bulls very similar to the one they went up against last weekend. I am not sure whether there are as many rider-friendly matchups in the draw as there were in Melbourne, so if they can land around that 30% riding percentage again, I think they will be doing well.

Let's break down some of the most intriguing matchups in each round:

Round 1 Matchups

Diego Galdino on OY63 Bad Boy Brown (Lazy G Bucking Bulls)

Galdino faced a couple of tricky bulls that turned back away from his hand in Melbourne, but he gets a chance to rebound here in the opening round against Bad Boy Brown. Left Handers own all seven of the scores recorded aboard this bull, with a 50% success rate. Bad Boy Brown doesn’t have the most consistent pattern, so it's hard to predict how it will play out, but I think he will fake to the right and turn back to the left. The score isn't expected to be huge, but it could set the Brazilian up for a strong aggregate finish if he can convert a tough opportunity in Round 2.

Colby Edgar on 218 Ranga Time (Keliher Bucking Bulls)

The Tamworth cowboy hasn't had the smoothest run over the past couple of months of competition, facing a long run of difficult and unsuitable bulls at recent events, but he gets one here that may suit him. Ranga Time has given up just the one score in his short career, and I think he looks as though he will be a lot kinder to a left-handed rider than to the righties. Keny Roger de Oliveira posted 82.60 points aboard this bull in Brisbane at Origin II in June, and I think that score will be quite typical of what we start to see recorded. Expect the bull to turn left and into Edgar’s hand.

Luan Crystian Camara on K22 Night Howler (Dunne Bulls)

Camara is really struggling to regain the form that saw him finish runner-up to Kurt Shephard in last year's National Standings, covering just three of his fourteen bulls this season. However, his recent run of opponents have all turned back away from his hand. Night Howler should turn back to the right into his hand, which should give the Sao Paulo bull rider the advantage here. Boston Leather won a round on this bull at Origin II in Brisbane with 85.90 points, and I think that will be a good score in this round. These two drew each other at Cairns, but they didn’t get out of the chutes, so hopefully they can get set and going this time.

Ethan Coster on 711 Seven Eleven (CF7 Bucking Bulls)

The Miriam Vale talent has struggled to get it going over the last few months, bucking off his last eight bulls, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a tougher run of bulls in any rider's results. But Coster gets a good chance to get the train back on the tracks here. He rode Seven Eleven en route to his event win at the Toowoomba Meatstock Touring Pro in March. They met again at Newcastle in Origin 1, where the bull levelled their series at the 6-second mark. Five of the last six scores recorded aboard this bull were made by left-handers. Expect the bull to leave the chutes strong, possibly faking to the right before turning back to the left and into Coster's riding hand.

Round 2 Matchups

Alison Aguiar on 011E Alpha Blokes Warden (MJ and Keliher Bucking Bulls)

This was probably the first matchup most people highlighted on their daysheets when it came out on Tuesday afternoon. Aguiar has been riding well of late. Outside of origin competition, he has ridden five of his last eight bulls. He made an excellent ride in Round 1 last week aboard a rarely ridden bull but took a bit of a hit in the process, which may have affected him in his Round 2 buck off. The Warden needs no introduction. After giving up three quick scores, he was back to his brutal best in Melbourne, winning his bout in 2 seconds flat. He has been favouring a spin to the right of late, which will be away from Aguiar's hand, but the potential for big points is there.

Donnie Rutherfurd on 218 Mr Colourful (CF7 Bucking Bulls)

Mr Colourful has given up two quality scores in his last two trips, with Luan Crystian Camara marked 84.60 points in Sydney and Kurt Shephard awarded 85.10 points in Melbourne last week. The bull had previously preferred a spin to the right, but last week, with Shephard aboard, he went left. Rutherfurd has been riding well into and away from his hand, so I don’t think it will matter too much which way the bull decides to turn back. The Mount Isa cowboy rode very confidently in Melbourne, coming away with a score in Round 2 to finish inside the top five. Expect more of that here.

Kelsey Pavlou on 817 Extra Fly (Morgys Cattle Company)

This is one of the more interesting matchups of the night. Extra Fly bucked off twelve straight before Clint Glass rode him at the Sydney Meatstock Touring Pro for 85 points, but he has since defeated the next three cowboys. That sounds grim from a rider's perspective, but what makes this matchup so compelling is that 9 of the last 11 attempts have been by left-handed bull riders. This bull's action strongly favours right-handed riders, and the qualified ride percentage for righties aboard this bull in his career is almost 40%. So, I like Pavlou's chances here, with Extra Fly expected to turn back to the right and into his hand. The Toora talent has been riding well over the last month or two, cashing cheques at his last three starts on tour.

Thomas Triplett on 8519 Man Glitter (Morgys Cattle Company)

Triplett hasn’t been seen much on tour in recent months, but when he has, he has converted on 50% of his opportunities, with some really good rides in his results. He faces a bit of a task here in Round 2, but I am looking forward to seeing how he handles the matchup. Right-handers have a much better chance aboard this Man Glitter, accounting for five of the six scores, and all of those were good enough to pick up the corresponding round win. So, this is a bull you want to draw as a cowboy. Man Glitter will turn back to the right and into the Bungundarra young gun's hand.
